H2a2 Names of God – El-Elyon, The Most High God.

πŸ“– READ:  Genesis 14
In Genesis 14:18, Melchizadek, King of Salem, was identified as a priest of El Elyon.

:19, Melchizadek blessed Abram and identified him as belonging to El Elyon, also identified as “Owner / Possessor of the Heavens and the Earth.”
:20, and Melchizadek blessed (praised) El Elyon and identified He was who had delivered the enemies into Abram’s hand.

:22 Abram said, “I have raised my hand to YHWH El-Elyon, Creator of heaven and earth,” meaning he had made a vow to his God, who He also identified as El Elyon, but with the added name of YHWH.

New Testament equivalent: Jesus was referred to by demons as “Son of the Most High.” In Matthew 28:18a, the resurrected Jesus stated He had been given the same position as El Elyon when He said:

πŸ€” REFLECT: El Elyon, the β€œMost High God,” emphasizes God’s ultimate authority, transcendence, and supremacy over all other powers and deities. El Elyon is used throughout the Hebrew Bible to emphasize that God has no rivals, equals, or superiors.

Some synonyms in Western history are:

“The Supreme Deity” = the ultimate, all-powerful, and eternal divine entity that created, sustains, and rules the universe.

“The Supreme Judge of Mankind” = the ultimate divine authority appealed to by the American founders for the righteousness of their cause.

Therefore, praying to Elyon is like taking your plea to the Supreme Court. Consider using this Name when you wish to praise and exalt God “to the highest,” (kind of like the angels at Christmas), and to take your requests to the God who is the Highest Authority.

πŸ™ REPEAT back to God in prayer:

Psalms employs the title Elyon thirty times, often pairing it with YHWH, God’s covenant name with Israel. El Elyon is used interchangeably with both Elohim and YHWH. This interchangeability reminded Israel that there were no circumstances outside the authority of their covenant God, because He is also the Creator God, who has existed from the beginning, as well as the Most High God, above everyone and everything on Earth, as well as in Heaven.

In the Psalms, Israel’s worship books, the use of Elyon reminded them that the One they approach in prayer and worship, although He is enthroned above all creation, is willing to listen to their prayers, step down from His position of ultimate authority, and reach out to save them in response.

In the following four Psalms, different kinds of prayers toYHWH Elyon are interpretively personalized. Read through them and maybe use one of them when you find yourself in a situation where you need to take your plea to the “Supreme God,” knowing that He will hear you, listen to you, and reach out to help on your behalf.

The Psalms with Elyon used here are:

1. Psalm 47 – Praise to theMost High God, Ruler of all the Earth.

2. Psalm 9 – Praise to the Most High God and prayer for deliverance from enemies.

3. Psalm 57 – Praise for El-Elyon and prayer for safety from enemies.

4. Psalm 97 – A song of praise to the Sovereign Lord.

THE NEXT BLOG

The first two names for God in Genesis were in common usage in the Middle East, but we don’t know their origin. The next name given for God in the Bible is the first Name that God calls Himself by, at least according to the written record.

β€’ We’ve had Elohim, which emphasizes the pre-existent godhead who created the world and the Universe.

β€’ Then we have El-Elyon, the pre-eminent God who is over all rulers, powers and authorities…

Where do we go from here? How does God want to name Himself and why?
